Every year, Wartburg, Tennessee, is home to the most challenging and unique ultramarathons in the world, the Barkley Marathons. As a community, we are proud to be the host location for this grueling race and welcome runners worldwide to our beautiful Frozen Head State Park in the Cumberland Mountains.

The Barkley Marathons have a unique and unusual history. The idea for the race was inspired by the 1977 escape of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., from nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Ray, who was on the run from the authorities, managed to cover only about 12 miles after running for 54.5 hours in the woods while hiding from air searches during the day.

Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, a Tennessee native and an avid runner heard about Ray's escape and was unimpressed by the low mileage that Ray had managed to cover. Cantrell thought he could run at least 100 miles, and thus the Barkley Marathons were born. Cantrell named the race after his longtime neighbor and running companion, Barry Barkley.

The race was first run in 1986 and has since become one of the most famous and challenging ultra-marathon races in the world. The course is set in Frozen Head State Park, which covers over 24,000 acres in the Cumberland Mountains, providing the perfect setting for such a grueling race.

The Barkley Marathons are not for the faint of heart. The course covers over 100 miles, with runners having to navigate through five loops of a course designed to be intentionally difficult. Thus, the terrain is rugged, the inclines are steep, and the weather is unpredictable. The race's culture is also unique, with runners relying on cryptic clues to navigate the course and the starting horn being replaced by the sound of a conch shell.

As a town, we recognize the Barkley Marathons as an important part of our community and the state of Tennessee. It brings together runners, volunteers, and spectators from all over the world, showcasing our state's beautiful natural landscapes and the resilience of the human spirit.

We are grateful to the organizers of the Barkley Marathons for all the work they put into this event, and we look forward to welcoming runners back year after year. If you are an extreme athlete and you're considering participating in the Barkley Marathons, we encourage you to embrace the challenge and experience the beauty of Wartburg and Frozen Head State Park.

Do we recommend participating in the Barkley Marathons? Absolutely not. It's a course designed for extreme athletes only. You must be the best of the best to finish the Barkley successfully. For more information, visit: wartburgtn.org/barkley-marathons
